Mardi Gras Hand Fans

Purple, green and gold, ready for the party

Mardi Gras belongs to the people who built it, so we will not explain it to anyone who grew up on it. We make fans. What we can do is hand you the three colors and a very good reason to open one. Carnival season opens January 6 and Fat Tuesday lands on February 9, 2027, which is a lot of party to dress for.

Lead with the shine. Gold Sparkle and Purple Sparkle are all-over glitter, set into the fabric so it stays on the fan and off your outfit. Gold Holographic Feral and Peacock Vibes XL are reflective: they catch the flash, the sun and the string lights and throw it right back. Want green? Air Conditioning is a deep hunter green with the joke built in, and Tropical Bliss wears it in palm leaves. Every fan arrives in its own velvet pouch. Shipping is $5.95 flat under $55, and standard shipping is free to US addresses from $55.

These are folding fans: the standard size opens to 16.5 inches and folds to 9, and the XLs open to 26 inches and fold to 13. Bring one to the parade, the ball, the house party or the king cake party.

Matching fans for your krewe, parade group or party

Mardi Gras questions, answered

Mardi Gras, also called Fat Tuesday, falls on Tuesday, February 9, 2027. Carnival season opens on January 6, Twelfth Night, and runs up to that day.

Purple, green and gold. Every fan on this page was chosen for one of the three: gold and lilac glitter, reflective gold, an iridescent teal and violet, and greens from deep hunter to palm leaf.

Fans are part of New Orleans parade style: the Historic New Orleans Collection describes the city's social aid and pleasure clubs in parade outfits that include fans, waving them as they dance. Past that, we will let the people who live it tell it. Parades and balls set their own rules on what you can carry, so ask before you pack one.

Standard fans open to 16.5 inches and fold to 9, small enough for a clutch, on FSC certified wood ribs. The two XLs, Champagne Gold and Peacock Vibes, open to 26 inches and fold to 13, on bamboo ribs. The printed fans use fabric that is 75 percent recycled cotton and polyester, the glitter fans use polyester glitter fabric, and the holographic ones use holographic fabric. Holographic fabric is stiff when new, so open and close it slowly a few times before the big night.

They are reflective, not luminous. The glitter and holographic finishes catch the flash, the sun and the lights and throw it back, so they need light to do their work.
